After a few weeks off due to the impact of Hurricane Helene, the Swainsboro Tigers were back in action this past Friday night with a modified schedule. Originally, the Tigers were set to play Toombs County in their first region matchup, but due to the storm, that game was moved to the end of the season. Instead, the Tigers faced Savannah Country Day.
It was a cool, crisp night perfect football weather and it felt great to return to some sense of normalcy. Our Tigers, eager for their first region win of the season, came out of the locker room focused, determined, and ready to win. A silver lining of the break caused by the storm was that many of our injured players were able to get some much-needed rest and rehabilitation, allowing them to return to the field in better shape.
The Tigers opened the game with the defense setting the tone early. They pressured Savannah Country Day’s quarterback at every opportunity. Sophomore linebacker Jobias Smith made his presence known with a quarterback hurry that forced an incomplete pass and led to a Savannah Country Day punt. Swainsboro’s offense took control, marching down the field with a solid running game led by senior quarterback Bryson Tarver, who made explosive plays in the opening drive. He wasn’t the only threat, though—senior running back Quinn Brown scored the Tigers’ first touchdown on a jet sweep to the right, going in virtually untouched. This gave the Tigers an early 7-0 lead.

The Tigers dominated possession throughout the first quarter and into the second. They drove down to the 1-yard line and attempted to score on fourth down, but Savannah Country Day’s defense held strong, forcing a turnover on downs. Seizing the momentum, Savannah Country Day marched 98 yards down the field for their first touchdown of the night, tying the game at 7-7. However, the Tigers quickly responded with another touchdown to take a 14-7 lead into halftime.
Opening the third quarter with possession, the Tigers aimed to extend their lead but threw an interception, which Savannah Country Day returned to tie the game at 14-14 early in the third. The Tigers kept the game exciting, though, with another strong offensive drive. Bryson Tarver punched in another touchdown, putting the Tigers back on top. However, a missed extra point kept the score at 20-14.
The third quarter was the most thrilling of the game. Savannah Country Day’s offense was marching down the field, but the Tigers’ defense held tough. With Savannah Country Day threatening inside the 5-yard line, sophomore linebacker Christian Tarver intercepted a pass at the 2-yard line and returned it 98 yards for his first career touchdown. The Tigers added a two-point conversion, pushing the lead to 28-14.
Savannah Country Day scored one more touchdown, but they couldn’t close the gap. The Tigers emerged victorious, 28-21, earning their first region win of the season. The Tigers now look to keep their winning streak alive as they face Vidalia in another regional matchup this Friday at 7:30 p.m. Make sure to come out and support our student-athletes and coaches.
