After reading the column of La’Rose Tapley, I found material for my column. Since I remember La’Rose and Sollie from SHS, it is a delight for me to know more and also share. Their first-born son was delivered in Swainsboro by Dr. Brown. My first-born son was born a Texan in San Antonio at Lackland Air Force Base Hospital. My mother was so thrilled and just had to find a way to get to that far away place. She was still working at the Blade and was encouraged by Jerry Pryor to make the trip. He set up a reservation for her to fly there. She was reluctant and scared to fly but did not stop her from going. My Uncle took her to Atlanta for the flight. She was so thrilled to be a grandmother and thought my baby boy, John, was the finest baby ever born. Her heart was broken when she had to return home. My second son Jeffery was born three years later in Natchez, Mississippi. She came there on the Greyhound Bus. Since I was an only child, she was happy that I was having a family. Sadly, she died before birth of my daughter. Oh, how she would have loved a granddaughter. I have three grandchildren who were born right here in the Carolinas and only a short drive away. Dr. Brown is well remembered and appreciated. He was an Emanuel County native and returned home after service in World War II. As soon as he finished medical school, he was drafted and while in service he increased his medical skills. Returning home, he opened a small hospital in a house on Church Street. He was not a specialist in any field, but he did minor surgeries and treated many ailments. He was a leader in the building of Emanuel County Hospital and served there for rest of his career. He was remembered as having a colorful vocabulary and lack of tact. However, he was praised for his abilities and care. I will never forget the day of my father’s fatal heart attack. My mother and I were outside the door of emergency room praying for his life. Dr. Brown came out and put his arm around our shoulders. With a somber voce and misty eyes said, “We have lost the Judge.” I was a senior in high school, and that was the day my childhood ended.
