Last Friday, the Swainsboro Tigers traveled to Toombs County to finish out their regular season. This game was originally postponed due to Hurricane Helene, which put a pause on football and many other high school sports across Georgia. Facing Toombs County, one of the top-ranked teams in the state, was never going to be easy. But true to their fighting spirit, the Tigers showed up ready to compete.
Toombs County was strong on both sides of the ball, with a balanced attack that could run and pass effectively. Despite the Tigers’ best efforts, the Bulldogs pulled away, winning 44-8. Even though it was a tough game, Swainsboro never gave up and battled until the final whistle.
There were some shining moments for the Tigers, especially from their younger players. Freshman Kamarion Dukes had a standout performance with two interceptions in the first half. Later, when junior quarterback Kason Edenfield got injured, Dukes stepped in at quarterback during the third quarter. He managed to make a few good throws and scored the Tigers’ only touchdown of the game with a gutsy 35-yard run up the middle. The young talent on this team, like Dukes, gives fans plenty of reasons to be excited for the future.

Now that the regular season is done, the Tigers find themselves ranked 25th out of 32 teams in the GHSA Single-A Division I public state playoffs. Their next challenge is against 8th-ranked Northeast Macon. This isn’t the first time the Tigers have faced off with Northeast Macon; the teams have a bit of history, including scrimmages and an unforgettable playoff game in 2018 where the Tigers blocked a field goal attempt in overtime to secure a trip to the Final Four.
Over the past two years, Swainsboro has made deep playoff runs, reaching the state championship game and finishing as the runner-up. These experiences have made the team tougher and more determined than ever. The players, especially the seniors, know what it takes to play on the biggest stage and are eager for another shot at bringing home the title.
This is the sixth year in a row that the Tigers have made it to the state playoffs. For them, this time of year is familiar territory. The coaches and players know that everyone starts with a clean slate, and anything can happen. To bring home their first state championship since 2000, the Tigers need to win five straight games. The seniors understand what’s at stake and are ready to give it everything they’ve got.
For those wanting to cheer on the Tigers, the playoff game against Northeast Macon will be on Friday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Stadium, 1210 Shurling Drive, Macon, GA 31217. Let’s come together, Tiger Nation, and support these young men and their coaches as they push for a state title!
