SMS Tigers Basketball kicks off season with teamwork, growth, and a tournament win

The Swainsboro Middle School basketball season is off to an exciting start, and Head Coach Liam Cushman is all about building more than just great players. He’s working to help these boys grow into better young men, both on and off the court. With a focus on teamwork, hard work, and having each other’s backs, this season looks to be a promising one.

Coach Cushman sets the tone for the team’s goals by saying, “We want our players to grow as people, not just as athletes. Our goal is to win with respect, give our best effort on the court, and do great in school. On the court, we’re aiming for a region championship. We want our 8th graders ready for high school basketball, 7th graders stepping up as leaders next year, and 6th graders ready for bigger roles. Off the court, getting A’s and B’s is a big deal. These guys are students first.”

The recent tournament at Langston Chapel showed just how much the team has grown. “We had a great experience there,” Cushman said. “We got better every game. We started off a bit slow, but by the second game, our defense was strong. By the championship game, everything fell into place. My favorite moment was during the last two minutes of the championship when one of our 8th graders gave his jersey to a 6th grader so he could play. It showed just how much they care about each other. Winning was great but seeing that bond was even better.”

Teamwork is built through positive communication and having older players mentor younger ones. “In practice, we make sure everyone talks to each other in a positive way,” Cushman explained. “Plus, we let our 8th graders teach the plays to the 6th graders. It helps the younger players feel comfortable and part of the group. They know they can go to their older teammates for help.”

Building player confidence is all about encouragement and support. “We don’t tear players down for mistakes,” Cushman said. “Mistakes are part of learning. We want our players to know they won’t be punished for trying and making errors. That way, they play with more confidence. Off the court, we hold weekly tutoring sessions so everyone can get help with schoolwork if they need it. No one feels alone because we’re all in this together.”

The Langston Chapel tournament provided a great learning opportunity. “It was especially helpful since the hurricane cut our practice time short,” Cushman shared. “You learn a lot by playing real games. Competing in three games helped everyone grow and gain confidence. Every player got to be on the court at some point, which was a big boost for the whole team.”

Coach Cushman’s focus on building character, teamwork, and confidence is setting up Swainsboro Middle School basketball for a memorable season. The lessons learned and bonds formed will carry these boys far, both in basketball and in life.
