Thankful to be alive after the storm hit our area, Seedling Garden Club met on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Swainsboro Methodist church social hall. President, Nancy Lisenby called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. She opened meeting by thanking all for coming and thankful we were all well and alive. She shared an inspirational moment titled “God’s Greenhouse.” People have greenhouses to protect plants and to grow plants. God also has a greenhouse for us humans. His is to help us grow and protect us. He sure protected us during the storm, and we are so thankful to be in His Greenhouse.
President Lisenby introduced the Honorable Judge Kathy Palmer who presented the program for the meeting. Her program was on “Plant Propagation”. Judge Palmer was born on a farm in Wrightsville, Georgia and being the third girl born into the family she was expected to work on the farm as her other siblings were required. This instilled in her the love of gardening that she has today. She stated, “working with plants brings her joy as well as being therapeutic at times when her job as a Judge gets hectic.” She presented the program wearing her red Ga. Garden Dawg’s apron. Members enjoyed seeing her worktable with plague that read, “It’s Not Hoarding if its Plants.” In her presentation, using her own plants, she taught us how to prepare plants to root them and to care for them as they root. She likes to use harmone herilcom to help the process and reminded everyone to save newspapers to use for mulch in flower beds. She shared a funny story of her Aunt Callie saving cuttings from her old fashion coleo plant she had been saving since 1960. She later passed the plants to her family members. The most unusual plant she showed was called “Tooth Ache Plant” used for medicinal purposes. The members were taught how to take a gallon jug and make a greenhouse out of it. (There is that greenhouse use again).
In the business session: no minutes were presented due to secretary being ill and unable to attend a recent meeting. Treasurer’s report was presented by treasurer, Kay Peacock. These were approved as presented. Yonna Bailey reported Yard of the Month will be put on hold until Spring. We laughed and said our Yard of the Month sign may be in Nunez after this storm hit. Nancy reminded everyone of the Oleander Annual meeting to be held October 16th in Savannah at the Landings. Club donated a basket to be auctioned off and saved tabs in support of Ronald McDonald houses were also carried.

Under new business: Members were reminded to meet at Emanuel County Nursing Home to replant the planters at the home. Martha Cobb reported that our annual November auction will be held on November 11 at The Venue. This is the club’s only money-making project. Club member, Wanda Scarboro, was congratulated for winning the Award of Excellence in Monochrome Photography for her entry in the 2024 Perry Fair. Her entry entitled “My Baby Doll” won over the 560 other entries. We are so proud of Wanda; the club is very pleased to have her as club’s photographer. Paula Karrh gave an informative horticulture moment for the month of October and November. These are always very educational.
Hostesses for the meeting were: Linda Dekle, Jane Durden and Jill Briercheck. They served pimento cheese sandwiches, cookies and soda. The serving table was beautifully decorated for a Fall theme using Fall leaves, flowers in pumpkins. Fifteen members (15) and one (1) visitor were present.
President Lisenby adjourned the meeting with Wanda Ellis winning the door prize. Upon leaving members were given a potted, rooting plant from the Tooth Ache plant used in program presentation. Thanks to Kathy for this gift.
