The Emanuel Retired Educators Association held its April meeting at Twin City Elementary School Media Center on April 17. Principal Jessica Collins provided a warm welcome to members of the group and expressed her gratitude for their many years of service in education. The tables in the media center were beautifully decorated using a spring theme, and a delicious lunch was provided by the school and served by Beta Club members of Twin City Elementary.
Following the meal, Officer Adam Kersey of the Swainsboro Police Department provided a most fascinating presentation regarding the use of drones by local law enforcement. Kersey told the veteran educators that the department has two drones that have provided valuable assistance on many occasions in helping law enforcement locate criminals, particularly in situations involving heavily wooded areas or poor visibility. Kersey demonstrated the drone in action, and members were very impressed, not only with his skill at operating the drone, but also with the many capabilities of the high-tech surveillance craft. Kersey is one of two Emanuel County law enforcement officers who are certified drone operators.
Past-president Jean Schwabe announced the slate of 2024-25 EREA officers, and members unanimously approved the roster. The new officers include Verdell Brinson, President; Toney Golden, President-elect; Wanda Ellis, Secretary; Lena Nwakudu, Treasurer; and Judy Hendrix, Past-president. The group will be installed at the May meeting. President Hendrix reminded members of the final meeting of the year on May 15 at the Fulford Center at East Georgia State College. Members were encouraged to notify Jean Schwabe by May 8 if they plan to attend, in order to provide an accurate meal count to the college. Not only will new officers be installed at the May meeting, but the EREA Scholarship will also be awarded at that time to an East Georgia State College student studying to become a teacher.
