Phillip Louis Smallwood passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Funeral services were held March 4, at 1 p.m. at H.M. Patterson & Son-Arlington, in Sandy Springs, GA, with a reception to follow. Interment was private.
Phillip was born November 20,1938, in Metter, to Forrest and Jessie Johnson Smallwood. After graduating from Emanuel County Institute in Twin City, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, where he earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Phillip was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and of the Army ROTC. After receiving his degree, he served two years as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps in Baltimore, Maryland. Phillip returned to Atlanta in 1964 to begin his career in architecture at Toombs, Amisano & Wells, and Cooper Carry. He was a founding partner of Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates (1979), where he was President until his retirement in 1998. Under Phillip’s leadership, the firm added offices domestically in Tampa, FL and Charlotte, NC, and internationally in Singapore, Beijing and Shanghai, China and Abu Dhabi and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Notable projects included Ritz-Carlton hotels in Atlanta and Lake Oconee, Orlando, FL and Montego Bay, Jamaica, Chick-fil-A corporate headquarters in College Park, the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, UT and Poydras Center in New Orleans, LA. Its corporate clients included Cousins Properties and Trammell Crow Co. Phil was a member of Garfield United Methodist Church.
Mr. Smallwood is survived by his wife, Sue; daughter, Jolie; and son, Scott; children’s mother, Faye; and two grandchildren, Zoe and Aidan Keysor.
The family is grateful for Torry Maeberry who put his life on hold for 2-1/2 years, completely devoting himself to Phil’s care. We are also grateful for Clardina Boyd, Alisa Anderson and Clarissa Gibson who assisted in Phil’s care these last three months.
