The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday, August 26, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 51 in attendance. Shari Watt provided breakfast consisting of pancakes, syrup, sausage, pigs in a blanket, grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, pimento cheese sandwiches, orange juice, grape juice, apple juice, cranberry juice and coffee. After the prayer by Veteran Emory Fennell, Chair Johnny then discussed the two upcoming events on September 11 and 14. September 11, Veterans at the Library will travel to East Georgia State College for breakfast by EGSC at 7:30 a.m. and then to honor those American heroes who died at the Twin Towers, Pentagon and in a field in Pennsylvania. The Brier Creek Artillery of the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution will fire three volleys from their six-pounder cannons. September 14, Veterans at the Library will travel to the Veterans & 1st Responders Memorial Park to honor those 24 American heroes who are honored by the 24 U.S. Flags flying on the fence. At 10 a.m., their names will be called out, followed by the “tolling of the bell” and then at the end a three-round volley by the Brier Creek Artillery Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution. Veteran Bob Nobles will then play taps on his bugle. Two new veterans attended this week’s meeting, Mike Champlin and Rodney Beckworth. Champlin served in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972. He was stationed at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia and Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, WY. Champlin’s highest rank was Sergeant. Beckworth served in the U.S. Army and the Georgia Army National Guard from January 17,1960 to January 17, 1968. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX, Fort Jackson, SC, Fort Stewart and Fort Gordon. Beckworth’s highest rank was Sergeant E-6. Librarian Shari Watt then introduced the speaker for the morning, Susan Moore. Moore spoke about scams on the internet through e-mail and how to watch for them. She also talked about the same problems with cell phones and what not to say and to be sure to just hang up.
