The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting Monday, April 1, at 9:15 a.m. at Franklin Memorial Library. With Shari Watt presiding for Chair John Tapley, they had 42 in attendance. Breakfast that included sausage biscuits with jelly, fruit cups, cupcakes, orange juice, grape juice, apple juice, cranberry juice, and coffee was provided by the UDC by Jane Durden and Anna Kate Willoughby. Acting Chair Shari Watt introduced the speaker, Veteran Anthony McCastle, Resident Director at Herrington Homestead. The Homestead is one of five Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes in the state of Georgia located about two miles south of Nunez on Ga Hwy 297. McCastle talked about the Herrington Homestead Annual Fishing Derby, “Kids Fishing Derby”, opened to ages six to sixteen, to be held April 27, to be held at Herrington Homestead, 8109 Hwy 297 in Nunez from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at the pond. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., weigh-in begins at 11:30 a.m. and cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest, longest, and most fish. For more information or assistance, please reach out to 478-307-0590. Shari then discussed the Veterans Golf Tournament to be held May 18. Only 18 teams of four golfers each will be able to enter. As of Monday, April 1, nine teams have registered, and it’s first come, first enter. Hole sponsorships are still available. Scotty is trying to locate churches in Emanuel County that will sponsor their church cemeteries with wreaths for their veterans buried there. For information, call Scotty at 478-455-3264.
