Dear Editor,

Subject: Ensuring accurate primary address records for election candidates

I would like to publicly and personally thank Dr. David Davis III for demonstrating integrity by informing us that he “no longer lives in the district” he has been elected to represent (The Forest Blade, Feb. 26, 2025, 3A).

As the upcoming elections draw near, it is imperative that we address a crucial issue affecting the integrity of our democratic process: ensuring that all candidates have accurate primary addresses within the districts they seek to represent, including current councilpersons and county commissioners. The primary address of each candidate is not just a bureaucratic formality; it is a testament to their commitment and connection to the community they aspire to serve.

Recent elections have shown that discrepancies in candidates’ address records can lead to mistrust among voters and even allegations of misconduct. Such discrepancies have the potential to undermine confidence in our electoral system and detract from the critical issues that should be at the forefront of election discussions.

It is the responsibility of our electoral commissions to rigorously verify the residency status of all candidates. This verification process should be transparent and thorough, ensuring that voters can feel confident that those standing for election genuinely reside in the areas they wish to represent. Moreover, candidates themselves must be diligent in maintaining up-to-date records to avoid any misrepresentation.

Having candidates who genuinely reside in their districts ensures they have firsthand experience of the issues and concerns affecting their constituents. It enables them to advocate effectively on behalf of the community with genuine understanding and insight.
