From the window of my warm comfortable apartment, my Kitty and I are watching snowflakes fall to the ground. A snowstorm is often predicted but sometimes does not happen. Since we are near Ashville and surrounded by mountains, we have a good chance of being enchanted by the fluffy flakes. Never lasts long before turning to ice. This “stay at home day” gives me time to watch my entire recording of funeral services of President Jimmy Carter from Plains to National Cathedral. I am thankful for the service of his presidency and thankful that I was able to meet him at church service in Plains.
I do not remember enjoying snow as a child. I had only learned about snow from books, Heidi and Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates. These came from the small library above Davis Drug Store and selected for me by librarian, Maxie Warren. I kept both books so long after the due date, that I always had a penalty to pay. My childhood passed without throwing a snowball or making a snowman. This finally happened in high school on a freezing winter day. Our highlight of the week was the Sunday afternoon movie at the Dixie. This was always a technicolor musical usually with a popular star. The theater was filled with SHS students watching possibly a Betty Grable and Gene Kelly musical. In middle of the showing, someone went to the lobby and returned with amazing announcement. “IT IS SNOWING.” We left our seats and raced out as fast as if it were a fire. We made snowballs to toss and short snowmen as long as snow continued to fall, and parents arrived to take us home. I do not remember another snow day, but I will always remember that Sunday afternoon snowfall. Do You? Write to Shirley at sptwissgmail.com.
