Hello to the new Chief

On Monday of last week, the official transfer of leadership for the City of Swainsboro Fire Department took place with the swearing in of Chief Alima Mims. The newly installed department head had earlier assumed duties on September 11, 2024, and on Monday of this week, he sat down with the Forest Blade for a “get to know you” conversation. The Chief was quick to acknowledge the warm welcome he had received since arriving in Swainsboro and the close-knit spirit of the community here. The journey that ultimately brought Mims to Swainsboro actually originated in his hometown of Detroit. A family trip South to Screven County resulted in the permanent move to Georgia years ago and he has been here ever since. Mims found his interest in fire protection at an early age and steadily moved up as opportunities came along amassing an impressive resume and a solid professional background. “I have always enjoyed the challenge of improving my abilities and helping others around me to do the same through every available channel.” Chief Mims makes no secret of his reliance and emphasis on training. He recently worked with Swainsboro city council to provide new specialized physical exams for Swainsboro fire fighters to verify their readiness capabilities as well as their physical conditioning for advanced training. When questioned about his impression of the readiness of the department’s equipment inventory, the new Chief commented that he was satisfied that the department had what it needed, but emphasized that constant monitoring of vehicles, life safety equipment and all mandatory standards must always be maintained. In general, Chief Mims feels that Swainsboro Fire Department is 100% focused on getting the job done, and that means adapting and adjusting when the situation changes. “I have been very impressed with the support we have received so far.” When asked if he was handed down any parting words of wisdom from retiring Chief Mike Strobridge, Chief Mims smiled, “Take your time. That’s what he told me, and I believe that it’s always good to look around and be sure of where you are before making too many changes.” Mims confided that his approach to the Swainsboro Fire Chief position was not driven by domineering ambition. “I considered this job as an opportunity that had been put before me, and something told me to pursue it. If I was not selected, I was perfectly content to continue where I was.” The new Chief likes to get out of the office and learn what the community is all about, so if you see him on the street don’t hesitate to stop and speak. It seems that Chief Mims and the Swainsboro Fire Department may have both found new opportunities here, and we wish that partnership the best of luck in the future ahead.
