Six Emanuel County 4-H’ers participated in the Southeast District 4-H Forestry Field Day. The contest was held September 11, 2024, at the UGA Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center in Lyons. Team members were Benton Harry, Elizabeth Harry, Nathaniel Harry, Sam Lawrence, Karaleigh Mills, Calvin Singletary, Dessie Singletary, and Lyndon Singletary.
The Georgia 4-H forestry program teaches youth to identify up to 70 Georgia tree species, as well as 40 common pests and diseases that impact those trees. The forestry field day competition also allows youth to test their science-based knowledge and critical thinking skills by using pacing and a Biltmore stick to calculate sawtimber volume. Participants in high school must also complete a compass course.

This year’s team was coached by Jakyn Tyson, Emanuel County 4-H Agent with the help of retired Emanuel County Extension Agent and volunteer leader Phil Torrance. Emanuel County 4-H Forestry programs are made possible by the generous support of Interfor of Swainsboro.
Georgia 4-H empowers youth to become true leaders by developing necessary life skills, positive relationships, and community awareness. As the premier youth leadership organization in the state, 4-H reaches hundreds of thousands annually through UGA Extension offices and 4-H facilities.
