The Bulldog Middle School baseball team got back on the field after a couple of rain outs the last couple of weeks. March 5, the team hosted Portal, defeating the Panthers in a comeback win 5-4. The Bulldogs trailed in the game until the bottom of the fifth. Hane Henry put the Bulldogs ahead with a double, scoring two runs to put ECI ahead for good in the game. Jacob Hughes started for ECI allowing three hits while striking out four. Judson Underwood relieved Hughes in fourth giving up no hits, striking out six Panthers. Leading hitters for the Bulldogs were Underwood 2-2 with HR, Henry 1-2, two RBI with a double and Lawson Frye 1-3. The Bulldogs had home and away games against Screven Co. last week. They lost both games to the Gamecocks with a 7-6 loss on Monday and a 7-4 loss on Wednesday.
Jack Lee started the away game on Monday in Sylvania giving up two hits, five runs and one strikeout in 1/3 inning. Henry closed the game, pitching the final five 2/3 innings scattering six hits, no earned runs while striking out seven. Hughes led at the plate going 2-3 with two RBI. Underwood smacked a two-run home run and John Rehberg and Jake Marsh had one hit each. Hughes started on the mound in the home game against Screven on Wednesday, giving up seven hits. Underwood pitched the final four 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six Gamecocks. Underwood was hot at the plate with three hits including a double. Marsh and Frye both had hits and Lee ended the game with a single and two RBI.
Thursday the Bulldogs traveled to Statesboro to take on Bulloch Academy, losing their third game of the week 11-6. Rehberg toed the rubber to begin the game for ECI going three 2/3 innings giving up five hits while striking out five. Lee pitched one inning allowing three hits. Frye closed out the final 1/3 inning allowing two hits and no runs. Hughes continued his hot streak going 3-3, two RBI, with a HR. Underwood was 2-2, three RBI, also with a HR. Lee was 2-3 including a double and TJ Weaver went 2-3.
The Bulldogs have home and away games against Metter this week. Monday, they hosted the Tigers and today will travel to Metter to close out the week.
