The Brier Creek Chapter and the Wiregrass Chapter of the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution held their annual “Education Day” at the Brier Creek Battlefield in Screven County. Each year, both Chapters invite students from schools within 60 miles of the Brier Creek Battlefield to attend one of the four sessions held at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. Each session has three 20-minute stations including station one, Dr. John Derden telling the story of the revolutionary war battle that happened on March 3, 1779; station two, Compatriots Steve Burke, Bernard Martin, and Alton McCloud demonstrating four tables of items that were used by the American Patriots; station three, Compatriots Ted Walker and Allen Mincey showing the different weapons used by the American Patriots. At the end of each session, the Brier Creek Artillery fired their four six-pounder cannons and Compatriot Don Bazemore played taps on his bugle. This year, they had a total of 370 students attend three sessions of the day’s events. Next years “Education Day” will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025.
