Erin Stanford, an 11th-grade honor student at Emanuel County Institute (‘ECI’) and a dedicated JROTC cadet, has made a significant impact in her community with the inception of Operation Digital Heroes. This program is designed to enhance computer literacy among military veterans equipping them with essential digital skills for today’s technology-driven world. In collaboration with United Veterans of Millen, the inaugural run of the program concluded with six military veterans successfully completing the courses.
Recognizing the challenges many veterans face in adapting basic computer skills, Stanford’s collaboration with United Veterans of Millen, Inc. brought her vision to life. The program consisted of six sessions covering fundamental topics such as computer basics, internet navigation, email usage, document creation, printing techniques, and smartphone use.
“I’m around military veterans a lot, especially with the service projects that I’ve worked on for JROTC, and I always noticed that if there was something with a computer involved, we always had to step in and help. Times like these are what makes Operation Digital Heroes necessary, Stanford explained.
Among the military veterans that completed the program, Sgt. Willie Johnson, a retired U.S. Marines War Veteran, shared his experience:
“Before this program, I struggled with basic tasks like sending emails or logging into the My Healthe Vet website. Erin helped me learn how to get on the Internet better and check my information on My Healthe Vet, so I’m more confident when I’m working with my computer and phone.”
Stephen Thompson, CEO of United Veterans of Millen and Petty Officer U.S. Navy War Veteran, also praised Stanford’s initiative. “Erin’s dedication and foresight are truly commendable. Through Operation Digital Heroes, she’s not only imparted valuable skills with the veterans in our organization, but she’s also shown our veterans that the community stands with them in their journey.”
Plans are underway to expand the program, with hopes of reaching more veterans in the region. Stanford’s commitment serves as a shining example of how youth-led initiatives can bring about meaningful change.
