The Brier Creek Militia traveled to Savannah for the two-day event of General Lafayette’s Bicentennial Tour in Savannah on March 21-22. Friday’s event was the arrival of General Lafayette, our nation’s guest, at the Savannah River Docks around 5 p.m. They participated in the Presentation of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. Next, a formal greeting was given by the Mayor of Savannah, Van R. Johnson. There was an Aviation flyover by a helicopter from the DNR. Then the Brier Creek Militia fired a 3-round volley with their 50 cal. Flintlocks. The next day, Saturday, they met at Johnson Square and Lafayette arrived by carriage. After the Presentation of Colors, Invocation, the Pledge to the U.S. Flag and the Star-Spangled Banner, the crowd was greeted by Mayor Van Johnson. After a reenactment of the Placing of Cornerstone monuments by General Lafayette, the Lafayette Trail Marker was uncovered. Then the Brier Creek Militia fired a 3-round volley with their flintlocks. The citizens then moved to the Harper-Fowlkes House for Lafayette to address the citizens and for American Friendship toasts. For the final event, they arrived at the Tricentennial Park for the dedication ceremony for Memorial Stones for William L. Sheftall. For the next 10 days, Georgia will be celebrating the Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of America in 1824/25.
