East Georgia State College (EGSC) invites you to join Dr. John K. Derden, Professor Emeritus of History, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, as he guides a day tour through Emanuel, Jen-kins, and Burke counties, retracing the historic route of General William Tecumseh Sherman’s blue-coated soldiers from Atlanta to Savannah during their famed March to the Sea. Travel along well-preserved roads, witness camp sites used by the general, and visit antebellum plantation sites, all while gaining insight into the local anecdotes and encounters with Union soldiers, Confederate forces, and citizens, both enslaved and free.
Dr. Derden, renowned for his comprehensive history of Camp Lawton, a Confederate prison located on the grounds of what is now Magnolia Springs State Park, will lead a tour of the site, accompanied by an illustrated talk about its intriguing history and ongoing archaeologi-cal discoveries. Celebrating the 36th anniversary of the tour and the 161st anniversary of the March and the operation of Camp Lawton, this event promises an enriching experience for anyone fascinated by Georgia history, the Civil War, or local heritage.
The tour begins at 9 a.m. at the Sudie A. Fulford Community Learning Center at East Geor-gia State College. Participants will meet for a brief orientation before departing by bus. Lunch will be provided during the tour, with an anticipated return by 6 p.m. Registration is open until February 14, 2025, with fees set at $85 per person and $50 for EGSC students and em-ployees.
