Derden speaks to Brier Creek

The Brier Creek Chapter, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, held its monthly meeting Thursday night, August 1, at Walls Diner in Sylvania at 6:30 p.m. With President Wayne Howard presiding, they had 17 in attendance. Vice President Lee Herron and dual member Dess Smith III mentioned to the Chapter that the Atlantic District Vice President General Scott Collins brought before the Georgia Society’s 2nd Quarter Board of Management meeting on July 27, 2024, for the approval to request at the fall National Society Leadership Conference in Louisville, KY to make the Brier Creek Anniversary Celebration on March 8, 2025, a “National Event”. It was unanimously approved by the Georgia Society. The Brier Creek event has been celebrated since 2016, became a Georgia Society event in 2019 and became an Atlantic District event in July 2024. President Wayne then introduced the speaker for the evening, Compatriot John Derden. John is a member of the Wiregrass Chapter in Swainsboro and a board member of the Brier Creek Revolutionary War Battlefield Association Inc. His presentation was on “General John Ashe”. General Ashe was the American Commander at the Battle of Brier Creek, held on March 3, 1779. Compatriot John’s presentation consisted of a power point and lecture that covered General Ashe’s life and the events that led to the battle. After John’s presentation, President Wayne and VP Lee presented several of the Brier Creek members their SAR Rosette pins that were never given to them when they joined the chapter. The next chapter meeting will be at Walls Diner on Thursday night, September 5.
