A very creative and competitive week concluded with some of the most challenging culinary dishes and fruit masterpieces presented by the students who attend the five-day Emanuel Chopped Jr. Advanced cooking class.
Volunteers from local Family Connection collaborative and State Family Connection staff assisted the students in this fun nutrition program that taught food preparation, safety, and healthy eating. This is one of the main strategies of the Emanuel County Family Connection Collaborative along with literacy. according to Tammy Allen, Family Connection Coordinator.
Some of the foods prepared by the young chefs were roasted brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and asparagus. The latter won the vegetable competition. The biggest project was making gourmet cheesecakes, which were judged by Kate Stoltzfus, the expert from Leanna’s. The White Chocolate Blueberry Cheesecake took the win. Fruit sculpting is always part of the class. This year the task was even more challenging. -Watermelon cakes! See the photo of the winning creation.
