The East Georgia State College (EGSC) Police Department recently hosted the Georgia Public Safety Training Center’s (GPSTC) Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) course. This vital training was attended by officers from various agencies, including the Dublin Police Department, East Georgia State College Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Sardis Police Department, and Twin City Police Department.
The Georgia Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training course is designed to equip law enforcement officers and other public safety personnel with the essential skills needed to assist individuals experiencing crises related to mental illness, co-occurring disorders, substance abuse, developmental disorders, or other brain disorders. This training is crucial in advancing public safety and reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues.
The CIT course is an intensive 40-hour, five-day curriculum that combines classroom instruction with practical exercises. The training is delivered by mental health professionals, subject matter experts, and CIT law enforcement instructors, ensuring a comprehensive and hands-on learning experience. The course is also approved by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Council.
“The CIT training is an invaluable resource for our officers and the broader community,” said EGSC Chief of Police and Public Safety Director Trey Drawdy. “By equipping our officers with these critical skills, we enhance our ability to effectively and compassionately respond to individuals in crisis, ultimately fostering a safer and more supportive environment for everyone.”
