The Kiwanis Club of Swainsboro held its weekly meeting Tuesday night, May 7, at the Rustic Grille at 7 p.m. With President Cheryl Goodman presiding, they had 18 in attendance including three guests, Holly Hattaway, Joelle Romanchik-Cerpovicz and John Cadle. The German chocolate poke cake, donated by Wanda Ellis, was won by Dess Smith. The Domino’s pizza, donated by Domino’s, was won by Dianna Wedincamp and Tim Goodman won the Mother’s Day gift, a hummingbird feeder. The program was hosted by Gary Couse who introduced Scotty Hattaway, recently retired Superintendent of the Emanuel County School system. Hattaway is a consultant to the ECS until his official retirement on May 31. He plans to take his 32.5 years of experience in public education and will be the Area Representative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) for Emanuel County. Established in 1954, the FCA is an organization working to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. Emanuel County is under the East Georgia FCA, headquartered in Vidalia. FCA includes programs in the local school systems, camps for recruited coaches and staff training, and support for volunteers. Since FCA is a non-profit organization, they raise money for their programs. Only 12% of the money raised is sent to the national office and is used for administration to include training of staff. The remaining 88% stays in Emanuel County to support the local program. Dess Smith announced the Veterans’ Golf Tournament on May 18 at the Swainsboro Country Club. The Swainsboro Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a hole. President Cheryl updated on what has happened since the last meeting. They made 400 bags of cotton candy on April 18 that was used during the April 19 Pre-K Fun Day where they cooked 400 hot dogs and provided the meal for 380 attendees of the Fun Day. They also made popcorn for the crowd. Thank you to the five Kiwanians who helped with the cotton candy and the seven Kiwanians who cooked and served the hotdogs, chips, drinks, and cookies and made popcorn. A special thanks to Pre-K staff and faculty, Swainsboro High School Beta Clubbers, EGSC Circle K’er Brian Priester who helped to cook popcorn, hand out drinks and stuff hot dogs in buns and to Citizens Bank for the use of their grill.
