Theoretically, the year is divided into four equal seasons: summer, fall, winter and spring. You would assume each one has its fair share of appeal and attraction, right? Not really. It’s like this. Winter has Christmas, Spring has, well . . . flowers, Summer gets July 4th, baseball and the beach, but Fall has football! You would think that’s enough right there, but then Fall also has hunting seasons, beautiful fall colors, football, Thanksgiving, football, an extra hour of sleep, and of course, football. Fall has got so much going on we really need to extend it by at least another five weeks. That would give us the opportunity to add a few more needed games to everybody’s schedule. Plus, it would start the new year off on an upbeat note, instead of the normal January gloom. Then, at the end of the regular season, we could have a Football National Federal Holiday Week with the crowning of King Football and Queen Football and exchange football related gifts underneath the miniature holiday decorated goal post in your living room. This would be followed by Bowl Month. There would be new laws and regulations for the state that wins the National Championship like no-charge cable, half-price on to-go plates at all barbecue joints and amnesty for all speeding tickets for anyone pulled over on the way to a ballgame. The Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Peace Price would be replaced by the Heisman Trophy, and Congress would be run out of town and replaced by the American Football Coaches Association. Naturally, the Supreme Court Judges would all be fired and replaced by the Southeastern Conference Officiating Crews wearing black and white striped robes. It goes without saying that the highest position in the land would no longer be President. “Head Coach” sounds pretty good. And what name would be a Smart choice? Take a guess.
Well, it is a tantalizing picture of what could be especially when we now must face the unbearable reality of only two more remaining regular season games. I guess we just have to make the best of things for the time being and do a little more planning to make fall become “SuperFall” and “the most wonderful time of the year”!
In the meantime, HAPPY THANKSGIVING, and GO DAWGS!
